Read here some reports on our company's developments.
July 17, 2009 FLACHGLAS Wernberg taking over Pilkington Switzerland.
The agreement for the takeover of the Swiss subsidiaries of Pilkington Germany by FLACHGLAS Wernberg, the glass refiner located in the Bavarian region of Upper Palatinate, was signed on July 17, 2009.
Since 2006, Pilkington has been forming part of the NSG Group, global leader in the production of glass for the construction and automotive industry. Pilkington Switzerland means the company headquarters in Wikon and also the three production sites in Wikon, Thun and Münchenbuchsee.
With the takeover of Pilkington Switzerland, FLACHGLAS Wernberg intends to continue expanding. The new group of companies is expected to generate an annual turnover of approx. 160 million euro. "The takeover of the sites provides us good chances to continue strengthening our market position in Europe", as Holger Rexhausen, Chief Technology Officer, states.
After the corporate merger, a total of 1,000 employees will be operating in the group. „As compared to international standards, in Switzerland the situation of this business remains firm. Pilkington Switzerland is economically well-placed", as Dr. Frank, Commercial Director of FLACHGLAS Wernberg, states.
FLACHGLAS Wernberg is one of the leading glass refiners in Europe. The medium-sized company produces functional glass and special glazing for buildings and vehicles as well as for yachts.
February 2009 FLACHGLAS Wernberg expands the Management Board.
With effect from February 1, 2009 FLACHGLAS Wernberg GmbH has expanded its Management Board. As Commercial Director in Wernberg-Köblitz located in the Upper Palatinate, Dr. Harald Frank (46) is responsible for the areas of financing, accounting and controlling, data processing and purchasing.
A further increase of contract business far beyond German-speaking areas together with the emanating challenges for the company, called for an expansion of the Management Board.
Dr. Frank has a PhD in economics and has been working for more than ten years as Managing Director of international machine and plant engineering companies.
February 2005 Innovative transparency: a staircase all of glass. (VDI nachrichten, Hamburg, February 25, 2005)
The young, transparent beauty is a world première: a statically cantilever staircase completely made of glass. This sensation is the result of a cooperation between the Academy of Graphic Arts Hamburg ("HfbK") and the University of Technology Hamburg-Harburg ("TUHH") with two industrial plants.
A stair system consisting of a steel-glass composite construction ("SGV") was recently produced. The construction and the design of the glass stairs were elaborated at the "HfbK" in the special field of structure design, under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Staffa and in close cooperation with the "TUHH". The construction principles and safety proofs for "SGV"-structures have been developed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Maier ("TUHH") and his team.
The particular and novel characteristic about the stair construction is the fact that not only the steps are made of glass but all glasses also serve as statically supporting components.
Especially the lateral glass-balustrade elements assume a supporting functionality. The particular characteristics of glass require extraordinary complex design plans and calculations for cantilever glass constructions. Supporting glass components must be engineered with extreme diligence - other than wood or steel constructions.
In order to meet both constructive and stylistic demands, members of the two academies had set up an interdisciplinary team working together for several months.
The presented staircase is the result of a design created by students of the "HfbK" for an academy-internal competition. The development of the glass stairs into a multifunctional system was sponsored by the above mentioned Hamburg academies and the industrial plants Glassline and FLACHGLAS Wernberg.
February 2004 SIGLA® Trep: walkable glass with a considerably eased approval procedure.
FLACHGLAS Wernberg has presented SIGLA® Trep - a new, walkable glass type that makes the required approval procedures in most of the cases much easier for manufacturers and end users.
The approval in each individual case ("ZiE") requires a calculative proof, an experimental proof of shock safety as well as a proof of remaining load capacity. For SIGLA® Trep these certificates are already available as to selected dimensions and glass bodies.
Consequently, for multiple applications the previously laborious procedure to obtain the building permission has become dispensable in most of the federal states. A considerable barrier for the use of glass – particularly in the interior design – has been dropped arising now completely new possibilities for the design in glass building.
With SIGLA® Trep glass stairs and glass floors can be produced for all-side linear supports as well as for two-sided linear and punctiform supports. The recommended glass thickness values for SIGLA® Trep allow an easy determination of the required glass types in consideration of the individual kind of support.
With the simplification of approval procedures, FLACHGLAS Wernberg will make the use of walkable glass in the architecture easier and less expensive.
